Olá, I'm Carmen. I was born in Belo Horizonte and arrived in Rio in 1977. I graduated with a degree in visual communication and arts in January and, since 1980, I've been involved with the world of fashion. First I was a producer for a photographer, later I designed window displays and finally in 1995 I began developing fashion accessories, putting together brand collections.
"I'm especially interested in and enchanted with accessories using horn as material. This began when I worked for a handbag company where, among other items, I developed a small collection of barrettes, pins and hair accessories, as well as belt buckles. Later I created a more complete collection that included rings, necklaces, bracelets, buckles and adornments for belts, bags and shoes.
"Horn was always discarded but it is of great visual, plastic and esthetic value, making it possible to create an infinity of forms – opaque or translucent and of different colors – in varied combinations. I consider these as unique sculptures.
"When sanded and polished, horn reveals a surprising wealth of forms, designs and colors. I rescue that beautiful material and introduce my own mark on it. My work process begins with the search for the proper horn and continues with the choice and combination of elements of each design. This results in unique pieces, both fine and contemporary.
"I am very happy with this work that I do, and it is the same horn that inspires me along with fashion trends.
"I think my country and our handicrafts here in Brazil are something very rich and I'm saddened to realize they are little valued. To all of you who appreciate my work, thank you!"
