Ring, 'Spells and Charms'

Miriam Santos

"Hola! I'm Miriam Santos Martínez, an industrial designer from Mexico. I've dedicated my professional life to designing products instilled with Mexican pride. During my first years of experience I was working for an airline company, where I learnt to design high quality items that could be adapted to an airplane's dimensions. After that, I spent some years designing electro-domestic products, 100% Mexican and consumer oriented. I can proudly say these products can still be seen in today's market.

"However, regardless of how interesting these projects were, I was more interested in designing products that would have a wider impact on Mexico's development and welfare. That's why I joined the Centro Promotor de Diseño, an organization that supports small businesses through competitive production. I designed a method to develop micro-regions and complete production chain. I worked at the Center for nine years, during which time we took our projects to over 120 communities of artisans. Our mission was to ensure good quality products that could compete in the international market.

"I was most successful in developing jewelry projects in silver and gold, including a project for the World Gold Council, based in Mexico. I created and organized the first national project for the development of gold jewelry, which was inspired by Mexican trends and fashion. There were 15 Mexican jewelry enterprises that, for the first time in Mexico, were able to develop the concept of jewelry collections and all the administrative issues it implied. I ran other similar projects that brought more support to jewelers in the states of Chiapas and Taxco.

"To me, silver possesses several qualities and it is surrounded by a certain mysticism. If we explore the number of different processes one could use to work with silver, we'd find endless options to create beautiful pieces. With silver, there's no limit to the imagination.

"I am enthusiastic about working with silver, especially knowing that Mexico is one of the top producers of silver in the world. However, the silversmith industry has not developed to the same level as other countries that do not produce silver. This means there should be great opportunities for the Mexican silversmith sector. That's why I think Mexican silver jewelry has a lot to say to the rest of the world.

"In that sense, I decided to dedicate the rest of my professional life to the development of jewelry designs. I aim to mix my creativity, my experience, and my ambition to launch a product and a Mexican name for the world to recognize through an element as beautiful as silver."
