Marino Huaman

"I was born in Huanuco in 1937, on the day after Christmas," Marino Huaman recalls. "When I was a boy, I liked art. I'd build houses and vessels of clay, and my friends and I would play with them. Eventually, I studied ceramics. But when I left my small town for the city, I took courses in electro-mechanics and, when I completed them, I worked in this field. One day I realized I could make just about anything – even jewelry. And so I enrolled in a jewelry-making course in Lima.

"I loved the course, and I really liked that the subject was related to my previous career, in that I worked with tools. So I decided to spend part of my time creating jewelry to sell.

"I work by myself, and every piece I make is crafted by hand. This work requires a lot of patience and dedication. I’m inspired by just about everything around me. First I design a piece before setting to work. I began by making rings, but now I have many ideas and find myself sketching necklaces of silver and precious stones. One day I want to study art glass techniques because this interests me in relation to jewelry."

To his Novica friends the artist says, "You can feel satisfied acquiring my pieces, as each is made with quality and the guarantee that the materials are genuine."
