Pushpita Singh

"Hi, I'm Pushpita Singh from the vibrant state of Rajasthan. I was born to a Rathore family, known to have a long lineage in the desert state of Rajasthan as well as in northwestern India. They were known as rulers, warriors and even great aesthetes. Though our family settled in Calcutta, our family's roots took us back time and again to Rajasthan. Clearly, I was greatly attracted to the crafts of my state, but was not able to articulate my interest in any way.

"I moved to Delhi when I got married. For several years I worked on things that interested me peripherally such as writing cookbooks, helping to post exhibitions, researching royal histories and backgrounds, and even handling the public relations for a television channel. However, my interest in textiles and in jewelry was abiding.

"I began by designing and crafting jewelry designs for friends, with the help of local jewelers. After I while, I decided to develop my interests, as a full-fledged profession. It was scary initially putting together funds, sourcing out raw materials, and investing in a portfolio of designs of my own. Particularly so, since I had started with gold jewelry sets with precious gemstones and diamonds. Though I enjoyed immensely designing with gold, I understood that it was too expensive and not many people could enjoy owning them, so I began to design in silver. The gemstones I obtain from Jaipur, famous for the quality and its artisans are experts at faceting and polishing stones.

"When I design an item, I envision how the silver and gem or gems look together. My designs are totally hand-crafted and I'm aided by patwas (stringing artisans).

"It is a heady experience, especially since women in our family are traditionally not allowed to wear any silver ourselves (we can wear only gold).

"The process is exhaustive, finding matching pieces is impossible at times, and to manufacture one's own designs in any large number is inherently risky, since the local market conditions are quite orthodox even though the artisanship itself is of high quality. The only thing that has kept me going is my passion for jewelry.

"It is this that I enjoy though, and I do hope that my designs on this site will provide you with a small indication of the kind of fabulous craftsmanship that exists in Rajasthan.

"In my journey into the world of fine and exquisite jewelries, I have been able to make a mark for myself. I have had many people appreciating my work. Though I do not have a personal outlet, I do supply some boutiques here. I have also exhibited my collections at the Indonesian Embassy in Delhi.

"I hope my products reach people globally. Do enjoy them!"
