"My name is Paula Mourão. I was born in Rio de Janeiro and I grew up with my father, one of Brazil's most renowned jewelry designers. I always paid attention to his work: how he worked with his hands and how he cared for the piece he was working on. My interest in the art of gems intensified as I grew older and I began to research working as a goldsmith. I took courses. I tried to find out about other jewelers and new techniques, until I finally took a leap into this fascinating universe. It's my passion!
"I started by helping my father at his Ipanema studio – I love this area, its my muse. Rio de Janeiro itself is my inspiration. When I use gems in my work, I use the inlay technique that incorporates gem fragments resulting in a fascinating effect. It doesn't matter which stone I use – fuchsite, jasper, sun stone, chrysocholla, peridot, calcite, moonstone, lapis lazuli or rubelite – they each lend their energy to make my work. My aim is to create something with personality that reflects my city, my creativity and my family's traditions. Today I feel a sense of achievement because my work has gained recognition.
"It gives me great pleasure to teach alongside my father in the studio we share. I always try to instill in our students that the best way to create a beautiful piece is to observe one's surroundings, the cultural baggage each one possesses, and be dedicated to what you are doing.
"We are very excited to be associated with Novica, because they will bring our work to the rest of the world, which in itself is very reassuring."
