Giancarlo Miranda was born on February 7, 1975, in southern Peru. From a very young age, Giancarlo has enjoyed crafting candles, ceramics, soaps, and chocolates, and he has also painted. He recently re-directed his creative interests into jewelry design.
"Even as a child, I was always attracted to jewels and gems," confides Giancarlo. "I would spend hours looking at jewelry magazines. I studied graphic design, and in one way or the other, I have always been connected to art. Then last year, by chance I started to work with copper. I designed jewelry items featuring Murano and Swarovsky crystals. I realized I enjoyed doing this, so I studied all that I could to perfect my style and craft. I've adapted an area in my house as a workshop, where I spend my time working on my collections. I start by creating an overall design, and then I make the individual pieces.
"The problem is, the items I conceive are really like my own children. It is very hard for me to part with them! I would really love to hear from clients who might tell me their opinions and suggestions about my 'children.'"
Up to June 2006, Giancarlo signed his work with his last name, Miranda. For personal reasons, he has decided sign his work as "IANKA," to symbolize the growth of his techniques, and the evolution of his designs. IANKA is Giancarlo's original abbreviation of his first name.
