Ceramic and suede necklace, 'Bohemian Rio'

Standing elegant since Colonial times, the Arcos da Lapa aqueduct remains one of Rio de Janeiro's most remarkable landmarks. They are situated in the Lapa neighborhood, renowned for its bohemian ambience. Milu Assad paints the legendary construction on a ceramic pendant that is set in silver as a tribute to her beloved Rio de Janeiro. The pendant hangs from a long suede cord that can be tied to the desired length.

Milu Assad

Milu recalls she was always encouraged by her family to attend courses in design, painting and sculpting. Her meeting with jewelry design came by accident. Planning to open a clothes shop with a friend, she thought of designing and creating accessories that would go well with the clothes they sold. Due to unforeseen circumstances, they were never able to open the shop however, she had so enjoyed making the accessories that she decided to enroll in a silversmith course.

Milu studied jewelry design at the Veiga de Almeida University and later participated in the Panorama Carioca and Souvenir Carioca projects, where she was commissioned to design pieces with a 'Brazilian soul.' Later, Milu was invited to join several projects to create collections inspired on Brazil and Brazilian history, which led to her famed "Imperial Court" collection.

"My dreams for the future include the possibility of combining silversmith techniques, which are many, with alternative materials and in a creative way," Milu tells us. "My main source of inspiration resides in Brazilian culture, which is quite unique because it is intimately tied to all the different peoples that contributed to the development of Brazil.

"My designs are intimately linked with the happy, vibrant spirit of the Brazilian people, as well as with our colorful landscapes, and our flora and fauna. I am very proud of the Rio de Janeiro collection I designed, because in it I detail all the important landmarks of this magnificent city. I decided to paint the scenes on ceramics, and set them on silver.

"I hope Novica customers enjoy my designs, because they reflect Brazilian warmth and happiness."
