Rekha Modi

"Hello, my name is Rekha Modi and I come from the lovely city of Delhi. I was born on June 5, 1952 and did my schooling and college there. Being the youngest of five siblings, I was really pampered and got all the love from everyone in the family. We grew up in an extended family where more than 15 children lived under one roof, so there wasn't any need for friends.

"From the time I was a child, I always wanted to do something different and creative in life. Whenever I'd see anything, I'd conceptualize it in my own style and it always came out beautifully. After I completed my degree in business management, I got married in 1978. I was a homemaker, but always on the lookout to create something innovative. I thought to myself, 'The whole world is doing so much. Why must I be left behind?'

"Raksha Bandhan, meaning 'Protection,' is a very auspicious festival for Hindus. On this day, sisters tie a rakhi (holy thread) around their brother's wrist to deepen their love toward all their brothers while he promises to protect his sisters at all times. I started designing rakhi and, for the last 15 years, I have been exhibiting these along with other gift items and novelties.

"In the meantime I also developed a fondness for gems. My husband was exporting pet products, like pebbles for aquariums. The pebbles were all semi-precious stones from mines in different parts of the country. While tons of rocks came from the mines to go out for shipment, I would be busy picking up few odd stones with which to create something different. From the handful of stones, I would give shape and angles to them to create tea-lights, spheres, bookends, vases and more. It was such fun! I'd add all these items to my annual rakhi mela. The responses started pouring in.

"As time went by, I thought, 'Why not design jewelry?' And thus my journey toward refinement started... from stones to jewelry, a journey worth traveling.

In the future, I want to achieve much more. I am very happy to be associated with Novica. I hope this relation also starts a new adventure.
