Puicon Family - Silver and gemstone jewelry
"I'm Percy, from Chiclayo, and I'm speaking on behalf of my family. My father set up the workshop with his brother in 1974, and they soon were known for the quality of their work and their professionalism. My siblings and I inherited his artistic talented and by the time I was in high school I was entering competitions as my passion for drawing and painting grew even more. I was planning on applying to the School of Fine Arts in Lima, but I wasn't able to do it for different reasons.
"As the son of a silversmith, my father taught and trained me in this art, for which I already felt an affinity for. It runs through my veins. I learned through practice and observing other artisans' particular styles. I believe we are constantly learning, even if the technique may remain basically the same, I am always open to learning new things.
"I took up jewelry during a crucial moment in my father's life. Since opening his workshop his business began to grow and he had bought some offices to expand his workshop. He bought them through the bank and he was on the brink of losing everything.
"At the time I was selling clothes but it didn't sit down well with me what was happening to my father so I decided to help him. Maybe I would have never gotten involved in jewelry making if it hadn't been for this, back in 2004.
"Since then, making jewelry has become my passion. I re-discovered something that was so much a part of me, something I enjoy doing. It is as essential to me as it is to eat, drink and breathe. And not only that, my family got involved and now one of my sons is studying jewelry making in Cajamarca.
"I helped my father recover these offices for his workshop, and that's where I work from now. We have patented our jewelry and my father has been recognized for his work, including a presidential award along with a few more from the Lambayeque government and private organizations. We are the first in our region to have been authorized to use the Peruvian seal on our products. We have taken part in important fashion shows in Peru and Ecuador.
"I feel proud to have met the challenge that presented itself to me because it gave me the opportunity to do something I had forgotten I enjoyed. What my father began is now a small family business in which all of my siblings are involved.
"As a boy I loved to paint and play soccer. I still love to paint and design, and I also enjoy going to handicrafts stores for inspiration. Recently I discovered another passion: culinary arts.
"My art is my passion. What I do comes from my heart and soul. Each single piece of jewelry includes many emotions, dedication and effort in our quest for perfection. I want each piece to awaken feelings, expressions and reactions, since each design represents a moment in my life.
"Our enjoyment in crafting each piece is what spurs us on to continue. Our art is an intrinsic part of our lives, and if I'm not designing I feel empty and anxious, as if something were missing.
"I believe that each piece of jewelry transmits a lot, from the first contact with the metal to it's shine. I want to preserve my father's legacy and in time inherit it to my children.
"As beautiful as this art is, it is a constant challenge and not only with regards to the difficulties that come from making your way in this business where sometimes there's unfair competition and lack of professionalism. The challenge also lies in creating a brand of jewelry that is professionally responsible, and this requires great dedication, time and the help of your family. I have sacrificed a lot for this art, but now I am reaping the gratifying rewards. We would not have overcome the challenges we've met without a strong sense of family unity and support. I thank the Lord for everything.
"In our collections you will find a lot of color, cheerfulness and energy. Some may evoke our cultural roots, but we'll always be playing with, and trying out new techniques in our quest for creating new, exciting and versatile jewelry. Know that in each piece you will find something special – a story, a feeling, a passion, and above all, the heart with which it was made."
