Jessica Carrasco

An economist by profession, Jessica Haydee Carrasco Cisneros was born January 13, 1972 in Lima. She studied graphic design, sculpture and still life painting in the prestigious Escuela de Bellas Artes, and found herself turning more and more toward art. Together with her friend Fiorela Forzzani Lozano, a Novica-featured artisan, she designs and crafts jewelry. "This came about when I'd buy jewelry items for myself," she says. "I'd take them home and take them apart to make them fit better, and I discovered I could make my own pieces. Now I spend every day just creating things."

But Jessica also decided to teach herself history and began to read books about the subject. "I decided to make my own huacos, or earthen jars like those crafted by our ancestors," she says. "I create replicas using their same techniques but with my own design ideas. I contacted the best potters in Lima and they craft my original designs. And in this, I've found the perfect combination of creativity and craftsmanship as we both work to keep the ancient artistic traditions of Peru alive.
