Earrings, 'Natural Contrasts'

The artisans unite natural fiber with metallic luster, creating a modern and stylish pair of earrings. A silver hoop gracefully supports braided cords of palha de caraguatá, the ends covered in sleek silver tips. Designed by Leticia Scarpa and Hugo Torre, these accessories make an alluring statement.

Known in Brazil as palha de caraguatá, this rope is handcrafted by indigenous peoples of the Mato Grosso wetlands. The caraguatá is a plant species related to the pineapple, its long and pointed leaves growing up to six feet. It can usually be found in rainforest clearings, where it forms an almost impregnable natural barrier for humans and livestock, serving as protection for smaller animals such as boars and coatis.

The residents of this pristine region utilize caraguatá fibers to create bags, belts, hammocks, and fishing nets. After stripping the leaves, the artisans weave together the fibers and wash the cords in the river's current. They follow a calendar that determines the appropriate amount of time for washing and drying, based on the phases of the moon. The result is a fiber of incredible resistance and endurance.
