Telma Camargo de Araujo

"I was born in Recife, Pernambuco. I studied Sociology at the University of Sao Paulo and from 1985 to 1986 I attended the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. For many years I worked in publicity and one day I discovered something at my beach – fashion and style. This is the manner that people show themselves to the world.

"I lived in Italy for eight years, where I developed techniques in ceramics and I began to sell stones from Brazil. My interests were crystals and antiques; I always procured them for use as implements in shiatsu massage, to make the patients I treated feel better.

"In 1994 I began, instinctively, to paint symbolic figures on ceramic. Two years later, on vacation in Recife, I became familiar with the symbolism of prehistoric designs found in the caves of Paraiba, an archaeological site in Pernambuco. It amazed me so much! After this experience, my work has become strongly influenced by the rich archaeological history of the Northwest of Brazil.

"During the years I was in Italy I participated in some collective exhibitions: Arte Senza Tempo, Alessandria, September to October of 1996; Rassengna de Ricerca Bienale D'Arte - Prima Totale - Nizza Monferato, December 1997 to February 1998. Also, I presented a few individual exhibitions: Infiorata, Primavera Barroca - Noto, May 1997; and, the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology of Bahia, Salvador, Brazil, from August to December 1997."
