Quartz and hematite bracelet, 'Harmony'

Marcia finds harmony in contrasts with this beautiful design. She sets crystalline quartz between two strands of dark hematite spheres and adds brass beads bathed in nickel and set with rhinestones. Marcia strings the gems on flexible strands so the bracelet can stretch slightly when put on.

"Hi, I'm Marcia Albernaz. From the time I was in elementary school, I liked to draw. I remember that I found my art classes the most interesting. I studied at a school taught by nuns, and there was a class called 'works' that usually involved embroidery lessons. But since I didn't like to embroider, the nuns let me draw. I liked to make bets with my brother, a year younger, about who could make the fastest and more perfect drawing, copying illustrations from our Disney character comics like 'Tio Patinhas' (Uncle Donald). In this way, first I began copying drawings and later was able to create new drawings. I always liked combining colors and creating compositions.

"My father was pharmacist and had a laboratory of pharmaceutical products. My mother didn't work, but both always encouraged me to something I liked, never influencing me in my decision but always leaving it up to my criteria. So in 1981, I decided to attend the School of Fine Arts, specializing in landscape composition. When I took the college entrance exam, I never had doubts about what I wanted; I always had fine art in mind.

"I work with jewelry and that came about partly by chance, but it has become my fundamental interest. One day I saw an ad for a jewelry course in the newspaper. A friend of mine was very interested in it and asked me to take the course with her. As she was going through a divorce, I decided to do so to support her. She ended up dropping the course, but I became interested that I didn't stop. I also work as landscape artist, that is my first formation. But jewelry is my basic concern.

"Art is a little encounter with the sublime, with the divinity, with God. Artistic expression is the way the artist uses his or her resources to pass on a personal message, his or her way of seeing the world. Similarly, I try to reveal my way of seeing the world, working basically with semiprecious stones in compositions with metals or other stones of different colors, but always combining them.

"For me, Novica is a partner and means for my jewelry to be worn, exhibited and appreciated by other people. And that is super-gratifying."
